Louisville vegetative roof is Kentucky's largest

A 17,000-square-foot vegetative roof system has been installed on the American Life & Accident Insurance Co. building in Louisville, Ky., making it the largest vegetative roof system in the state, according to The Courier-Journal.

Nana Lampton, chairman and chief executive officer of American Life & Accident Insurance Co., says a vegetative roof system was chosen to reduce the building’s contributions to global warming.

Although there are other vegetative roof systems in Louisville, the city has lagged behind other metro areas regarding green roofing. Lampton says she hopes the roof system will inspire other building owners and managers to replace their roof systems with environmentally friendly roof systems.

"I want to be a beacon of green in Louisville," she says.

More interest in green roofing is expected after the Metropolitan Sewer District implements its anticipated program of financial incentives for property owners who reduce storm water runoff.
