Kentucky jobless rate reaches 10.9 percent in February
Kentucky's unemployment rate rose from 10.7 in January to 10.9 in February as employers cut 7,500 jobs, according to
www.kentucky.com
. This is the highest rate since September 1983 and is higher than the current national rate of 9.7 percent.
Industries that experienced job growth included the education and health services sector adding 1,900 jobs and the leisure and hospitality sector adding 1,000 jobs. Employment was steady in the mining and logging sector and dropped most significantly in the manufacturing sector, which lost 3,800 jobs.
Additionally, the government sector lost 2,400 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 2,300 jobs; professional and business services sector lost 800 jobs; construction sector lost 700 jobs; financial activities sector lost 400 jobs; and information sector lost 100 jobs.
Since the beginning of the recession in December 2007, Kentucky has lost 122,600 jobs.
