Louisville metro budget attempts to complete projects

Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson has proposed a budget for fiscal year 2011, predicting little tax revenue growth but including plans to finally finish several long-awaited projects, according to The Courier-Journal. Officials are predicting a 1 percent growth in revenue, which will be eaten up by increasing costs of pensions, health care and salaries.

The $821 million budget includes a $485 million general fund, which pays for most city services and employee salaries; about $153 million for the Louisville Metro Police Department; $17.4 million for MetroSafe communications; $7 million for safety equipment; $5 million for external agencies, which include arts and business organizations, as well as organizations that provide social services for the poor; and $4 million in library expansions.

Additionally, the budget would build a pedestrian bridge across Sixth Street and pay for street lights, sidewalks and curbs around downtown, among other things.

Louisville's new fiscal year begins July 1. The Louisville Metro Council will spend most of this month reviewing and amending Abramson’s proposed budget.
